ABOUT THE PROJECT
While it’s been known as the Village of Northbrook for over a century, the Village was known as “Shermerville” from its incorporation in 1901 until 1923, in honor of Frederick Schermer, a local landowner who donated land for the town’s first railroad station. So, as the main corridor running through Northbrook’s walkable downtown area near the Milwaukee District North Line Metra station, Shermer Road not only serves as a symbol of the Northbrook community today, but its namesake harkens back to the town’s 19th-century roots, connecting the community’s past and present.
Identified in the Village’s 2018 Master Bicycle & Pedestrian Plan (MBPP) as a location where installation of a side path is recommended, in 2022, the Village of Northbrook was awarded $3,504,200 in Surface Transportation Program (STP) grant funding for installation of a side path and roadway resurfacing of Shermer Road through the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning. The planned improvements include concrete panel patching, asphalt resurfacing and base repair, bicycle and pedestrian improvements, and median improvements between Willow Road and Walters Avenue.
Atlas Engineering, as Prime Consultant, is providing Phase III engineering services, including contract administration and construction inspection for side path construction, curb and gutter removal and replacement, pavement patching, HMA milling and resurfacing, lighting, and traffic signals. construction of sidewalks, storm sewer improvements, signage installation, pavement markings, grading, landscaping, and restoration, as well as all incidental and collateral work necessary to complete the project.
As the Resident Engineer for this effort, Atlas is providing Construction Management services, including on-stakeholder coordination, site inspection, review of contract layout and design changes, record preparation, documentation utilizing CMMS, and contract management (Authorizations, Change Orders, etc.), and project closeout.
